This guide is for women who play at the park or the rec center and want to look put together. You do not need a second wardrobe. The short answer: cute pickleball outfits come from five simple formulas. A tennis dress with built-in shorts is the easiest place to start. It covers you, it moves with you, and nothing rides up when you lunge for a low ball.

Every one of the cute pickleball outfits we see at open play fits one of these five formulas. Pick the one that matches your shape and the weather, then buy one good version of it.
1. Tennis dress with built-in shorts. The one-piece answer. The liner keeps you covered on a lunge, and many tennis dresses hide a ball pocket in the liner or under the hem. The lululemon Align Dress is the softest version we know of. Add court shoes and a visor, and that is the whole outfit.
2. Skort and tank. The most common outfit at the courts for a reason: one good skort works with every tank you own. The Vuori Halo Performance Skirt has liner shorts and ball pockets. The Athleta A Game Skort adds UPF 50+ fabric. The NikeCourt Advantage Pleated Skirt is the classic tennis look with built-in shorts.
3. High-rise shorts and a cropped tee. For women who never liked skirts. The lululemon Hotty Hot High-Rise Lined Short comes in 2.5-inch and 4-inch inseams; pick the 4-inch for more coverage. Vuori’s Halo Performance Short is the softer cousin. Pair either with a boxy cropped tee that ends at the waistband, not above it.
Two formulas for cool mornings and early open play
4. Leggings and a long sleeve for cool mornings. On a 55-degree morning, full-length leggings and a thin long sleeve beat a dress with a jacket. lululemon Align leggings are the soft choice. The Vuori Daydream Crew is a light long sleeve that wicks sweat and covers your arms from the sun. It ties around your waist by the second game.
5. A light layer over anything for early open play. Add one layer to any of the four above: a quarter-zip, a thin crew or a windbreaker. The layer should come off in one motion between games. Zippers help; a hoodie you have to wrestle over a visor does not.

What matters when you choose
Fabric. Look for three things on the tag: moisture-wicking, four-way stretch and a UPF rating. Wicking fabric pulls sweat to the surface so it dries, and stretch lets you lunge without the hem pulling. UPF 50 means the fabric lets through about 2 percent of the sun’s UV, or one fiftieth. The Skin Cancer Foundation rates that as excellent, and UPF 30 to 49 as very good. Cotton fails all three tests, so save the cotton tee for the drive home.
Pockets. You need one pocket that holds a ball without bouncing it against your thigh. Liner pockets, hem pockets and a zip pocket on a skort all work. A phone pocket is a bonus, not a requirement.
A visor or cap. A visor keeps the sun off your face and lets heat out the top of your head. A cap also covers the part in your hair, which burns faster than you think. Either one finishes the outfit, and neither costs much.
The court-to-coffee rule. If you would not wear it to a café afterward, do not buy it. That rules out see-through leggings, neon that only works on a pro and anything you keep tugging at. That is the whole difference between cute pickleball outfits and gym clothes. It is also why a tennis dress wins so often: put a cardigan over it and it reads as a dress.
Sizing notes for women over 50
Liner length. Built-in shorts come in roughly 2.5-inch and 4-inch inseams. The longer liner stops chafing on a humid day and stays put when you bend for a low ball.
Waist. A high-rise waistband sits above the hip bones and does not roll when you move. The A Game skort is high rise, and lululemon labels its Hotty Hot shorts by rise, so you can choose.
Support. If you need real support in a dress, look for a built-in shelf bra or a cup-sized version, and read the product page for the support it offers. Otherwise wear your own sports bra under it and pick straps that cover it.
Length. Product pages list the skirt length. A longer cut covers more when you bend and still looks like a skort, so read that number before the color. Athleta’s Ace Tennis Skort runs up to 3X, which matters when other charts stop at a size 12.
Sun. Long sleeves in a UPF fabric beat sunscreen on the forearms for one reason. You cannot forget to reapply a sleeve. Our pickleball skincare guide covers the rest.

The picks, one at a time
lululemon Align Dress: best overall
This is the dress for women who want one piece that goes from the court to coffee. The Align line uses lululemon’s Nulu fabric, the same soft knit as the Align leggings. It feels like almost nothing on, and the built-in liner shorts keep you covered on a lunge.
That thin fabric cuts both ways. Treat it as a sun-exposure piece: sunscreen on the shoulders, or a layer over it for a noon game. It costs about $100 at lululemon, which is the main reason to read the next pick too.
Buy it if
- you want one piece that works for the game and the errands after
- you already own Align leggings and like the fabric
Pass if
- you play most games under a hot midday sun with bare shoulders
- you want a cheaper dress to test the formula first
lululemon Align Dress
Best for: women who want the softest dress on the court and will wear it off the court too. Built-in liner shorts in soft Nulu fabric. The Amazon button searches similar dresses.

Vuori Halo Performance Skirt: best skort
This is the skort for women who want the soft, stretchy feel without the lululemon price. The knit wicks sweat and stretches four ways, and the built-in liner shorts keep you covered. The pockets hold a ball.
Pair it with any tank you own. The quiet win for women over 50 is a liner that stays put when you bend and a waist that does not roll. We did not find a UPF rating listed for it, so count on sunscreen for your legs.
Buy it if
- you want a soft skort with real pockets at a fair price
- you like a liner that stays put and a waist that does not roll
Pass if
- you want a crisp pleated tennis look (see the Nike skirt in the table)
- you need UPF-rated fabric for long midday sessions
Vuori Halo Performance Skirt
Best for: the skort-and-tank formula on a budget that still feels good. Soft and stretchy, with liner shorts and pockets for a ball. The Amazon button searches similar skorts.

Athleta A Game Skort: best for sunny courts
This is the skort for women who play at noon in July. Athleta’s SuperSonic fabric carries a UPF 50+ rating, the level the Skin Cancer Foundation calls excellent. The skort has a high-rise waistband, two stash pockets and a secure back pocket. A ball, a key and a card all ride along.
Athleta’s sizing runs wide. Its sibling, the Ace Tennis Skort, is the same idea in a tennis cut and runs up to 3X. If your size of the A Game is gone, start there.
Buy it if
- you play in strong sun and want the fabric to do the sunscreen work
- you need sizes past XL
Pass if
- you want the softest possible feel (DreamKnit and Nulu are softer)
- you already own a skort and only need a top
Athleta A Game Skort
Best for: hot, bright courts and long sessions. UPF 50+ fabric, three pockets and a high waist. The Amazon button searches similar UPF skorts.

Vuori Daydream Crew: best for cool mornings
This is the layer for the early drill group. The Daydream Crew is a light, relaxed long sleeve in a soft knit that wicks sweat and dries fast. It also keeps the sun off your forearms, which take more sun on a court than you would guess.
It is a layer, not a jacket. On a 45-degree morning you will want a vest or a windbreaker over it for the first game. By the second game the crew alone is right, and it ties around your waist or stuffs into a bag.
Buy it if
- you play early, outdoors, most of the year
- you want sun cover on your forearms that you cannot forget to reapply
Pass if
- you only play indoors
- you run hot and strip to a tank during the warm-up
Vuori Daydream Crew
Best for: cool starts and sun cover on your arms. A soft long sleeve that wicks sweat and comes off in one motion. The Amazon button searches similar long sleeves.

Amazon tennis dress with built-in shorts: best value
This is the pick for women who want to try the dress formula before spending real money. Search Amazon for a tennis dress with built-in shorts and pockets and you will find dozens. Most cost less than one lesson, and many have a shelf bra and a ball pocket.
Read the reviews for two things: whether the liner rides up, and whether the fabric turns see-through in light colors. Buy a dark color first. If you reach for it every week for a month, the formula works. The next one can be the Align.
Buy it if
- you want to test the dress formula cheaply
- you play once a week and do not need it to last for years
Pass if
- you want fabric that still looks new after a season of washing
- you need a specific cup size or a long-torso fit

What to skip
Cotton anything. It soaks up sweat, stays wet, chafes and dries slowly. This includes the cute cotton tee from the gift shop.
Leggings without the squat test. Thin leggings turn see-through in sunlight. Squat in front of a mirror in the store before you buy.
A skirt with no liner. You will be bending for low balls all morning. No liner, no skirt.
A hoodie as the layer. It traps heat, it will not come off over a visor, and it ends up on the fence.
Running shoes. The cutest outfit on the court does not fix running shoes rolling your ankle. Read our guide to the best pickleball shoes for women before you spend on clothes.
How we chose
We chose these from current product pages, fit charts and player reviews, not from a season of wearing each one. We leaned on specs we could confirm: liners, UPF ratings and fiber content. We also watched what women at our courts wear week after week. We will add our own on-court photos and notes as we wear them. Brands rename models often, so if a name changes, the line still holds.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What should a woman wear to play pickleball for the first time?
Any athletic clothes you own, as long as the fabric is not cotton and your shoes are court shoes. A skort or shorts, a wicking tank and a visor is the standard outfit. Buy the cute pickleball outfits after a few sessions, once you know you will keep playing.
Do I need a skirt with built-in shorts?
Yes, or shorts under the skirt. You bend, lunge and squat for low balls at the kitchen line, and a liner keeps you covered. A 2.5-inch liner is standard. A 4-inch liner stops chafing on humid days and suits many women over 50 better.
Is UPF clothing worth it for pickleball?
If you play outdoors for more than an hour at a time, yes. A UPF 50 fabric lets about 2 percent of UV through, and unlike sunscreen you cannot forget to reapply it. Pair it with SPF 30 or higher on your face, neck and hands.
Can I wear leggings to play pickleball?
Yes, and on cool mornings they beat a dress. Pick a full-length, high-rise pair with a wide waistband and a side pocket. Do the squat test in a mirror before you buy, because thin leggings go see-through in sunlight. Add a thin long sleeve and you have formula four.
